I experienced this with my system too last time. In the end, i realise it is the hardware locking up the system. Its either the CPU running too hot(using AMD XP 1800+ with a temp of 60+degree celsius) or the graphics card. Problem went away when i bought a new CoolerMaster casing. Think you might want to check on that.
