Please forgive me if this is something that has been asked (and answered) many times before...the redhat-list archive is VERY long, and since it is private, I can't use google to search it.
I just installed RH-7.2. I installed "everything". In the installation process, I turned off firewalling completely (I'm perfectly happy with xinetd and ssh for my security needs), and I told it to use DHCP for network identification, and to NOT activate the network at boot time. Now my problem: X and Gnome work fine on the first boot. I log in as root, then activate the network interface via either "rp3" or "ifup eth0". The network starts up. Now, I can no longer start new X programs. Certain gnome programs will start, but I think this is because they are somehow child processes of the already running desktop. Not only that, but even if I bring the network back down (via "rp3" or "ifdown eth0"), I can still not use X. If I attempt to restart X via "ctl-alt-backspace", X won't restart, and I'm left at a text-based login. The XFree86.log.0 file gets a line like the following every time I attempt to start another X program (no other files in /var/log seem to get changed each time): AUDIT: Sat Apr 27 10:28:11 2002: 1082 X: client 19 rejected from local host This never happened in 7.0 or 7.1, that I recall, but it's been a long time since I set those up. Obviously I can simply do a "xhost +" BEFORE I start the network, and everything is fine, but this is neither secure, nor very pretty, and is not a long-term solution. I read something that made me think this MIGHT be a PAM problem, so I updated the PAM packages only, and the problem persists. I haven't updated anything else from the RH errata site yet, but none of the updates immediately struck my eye as something related to my problem. Any ideas? I'm using the archive option for this mailing list, so if you would be so kind as to CC a copy of any replies to me, I would be much obliged.
