I did read some of the docs on scanners in the kernel docs and on the
linux-usb website.  IIRC, all I did was plug in the scanner, make sure the
module was loaded (scanner.o) and the scanner was attached at
/dev/usb/scanner0 and added the line:
        usb /dev/usb/scanner0
to the /etc/sane.d/epson.conf file...

I fired up xsane and it just worked...
