You don't. All you need is Xvnc running on the remote, and the (tiny) viewer app on the client. You can even carry the client on a floppy disk, or you can set up Xvnc to accept http connections and use a java-enabled browser. And unlike X, it's stateless ... you can disconnect and then connect from another machine without losing your session.
