I cannot claim much expertise in the area of printing, symlinking libraries, etc. I have an HP OfficeJet g55 printer that I have used with Windows and now would like to use with my Red Hat 7.2 system. Even though this is an OfficeJet, the hpoj.sourceforge.net site seems to say that the DJ9xx driver is optimal for this printer and contains a link back to the hpinkjet site (but see below how I've tried and failed to get the hpoj drivers installed). I'm attempting to install/configure it using printtool as a USB printer. printtool finds it on /dev/usb/lp0 so I have been using that location. I've tried installing it as a 'local printer' using each of the three possible drivers (hpijs,cdj550, pct3). I have installed these updates from Red Hat:
foomatic-1.1-0.20011218.3.i386.rpm ghostscript-6.51-16.i386.rpm hpijs-0.97-1.i386.rpm hpijs-0.97-1.rh7.i386.rpm Omni-0.5.0-4.i386.rpm Omni-foomatic-0.5.0-4.i386.rpm printconf-0.3.61-3.i386.rpm printconf-gui-0.3.61-3.i386.rpm ucd-snmp-4.2.3-1.7.2.3.i386.rpm I have not installed ghostscript-hpijs-5.50-5.rh7.i386.rpm because it has a lot of files that conflict with ghostscript 6.51. So the problem is that it doesn't work. I install the printer, click 'Apply', then print a test page (I've tried text and ASCII). Apparently nothing at all happens. All I get in my logs is: Feb 19 14:04:33 alan hpijs: unable to set width=2550, default to page width=2400 Feb 19 14:04:33 alan hpijs: unable to set outwidth=2550, default to page width=2400 and also: [root@alan log]# lpq -a Printer: g55@localhost Queue: no printable jobs in queue Status: job 'cfA403localhost.localdomain' removed at 14:04:35.469 Again, I don't know much about trouble-shooting printer problems. In my few past brushes with printers, they worked without any hassle. Any advice would be appreciated. I did receive the advice that the g55 requires the OfficeJet drivers but I cannot get that rpm to install. I get a message about a missing library:: [root@alan amead]# rpm -Uvh hpoj-0.8-1rh7.i386.rpm error: failed dependencies: libsnmp-0.4.2.so is needed by hpoj-0.8-1 But I have ucd-snmp-4.2.3 installed which seems to provide libsnmp.so.0.4.2. I figured maybe I should recompile from source but then I get: [root@alan amead]# ls -l /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/hpoj.spec -rw------- 1 root root 2760 Aug 10 2001 /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/hpoj.spec [root@alan amead]# rpm --rebuild /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/hpoj.spec /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/hpoj.spec: No such file or directory Sorry for the length. Any help would be appreciated! I am posting here because, in theory, RH7.2 is "HP Office Jet ready" and this should be a snap. I'm hoping someone can show me where I went wrong. I'll also post briefly to the hpoj/hpijs lists. -Alan Mead _______________________________________________ Redhat-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list
