I found the following articles very helpful: http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/library/l-rpm1/index.html http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/library/l-rpm2/index.html As someone else suggested, starting with the spec file from the Red Hat SRPM and modifying it to use the new .tar.gz source file is also a good way to update a package so that it matches how/where Red Hat's RPMS install the package.
