Not particular to that exact hardware and may not even apply at all, but I've 
found that when KDE causes strange lock-ups and nothing else does (windows, 
Gnome, etc.) that it is usually sound related. Perhaps try (if you even have 
a soundcard) disabling sound altogether and see if it helps.

Or wait for more specific advise. ;)
