Being able to switch email reading software, or the boxes that you read from,
is indeed a benefit.  I sometimes read with Netscape on Windows, or on Linux,
or using Pine via a telnet connection.  It depends on where I am.

Another significant benefit shows if your server runs with tight disk
quotas.  Using procmail will sort your email into folders rather than leaving
it in your Inbox--which can matter quite a lot if you have separate quotas
for Inbox and the other folders.
