I think you probably want it to be 'xterm' (I doubt that this will solve your problem, but it is worth a shot).
To set the TERM var to 'xterm' for a given session, type: export TERM=xterm It is typically set to 'linux' at the console, but I think 'xterm' is probably a better choice in an X-based emulator.
