What is your partition layout like?

Here's a few things.  Check /var/tmp, and /usr/tmp.  To extra tmp
directories, that should really be pointing to /tmp, but don't.

Logs.  Clear out /var/log/*.{1,2,3,4}

That's just for immediate recovery.

Something that would help immensely would be to put /usr on a separate
partition.  /usr probably takes up AT LEAST >800Megs depending your
install.

Throw /usr on a separate partition (thus taking it off of /), and your
space problems are solved.
