Try changing this line
/usr/bin/fetchmail -q --syslog
to this
/usr/bin/fetchmail -q --syslog > /dev/null 2>&1
I don't know if it works, but it should.
As for it being the best way, it's similar to the way I used to do it
once before, I don't have that script around any more, but it was very
mich like it and it worked just peachy.
