You are correct, my apologies to the original poster. I knew I had read 
a post on the topic, and using the archives, it took me only about 40 
minutes to find it. :)

To quote Mike Harris:

As always, before purchasing any hardware, it is best to find out
wether or not it is supported first.  On the bright side, support
is not far away (in XFree86), and when it is supported, you'll
have a damn nice card to use.

That goes for all the 7*00 cards, and the 8500 also.  The 8500 
will only be 2D until 3D support is completed.  The standard open 
source "when its done" applies there too.
