Ben, you can reply to me privately and we can keep this going if you want. 
In the mean time, here's what I'd recomend:

eth1 problems:
Do you have a DIFFERENT machine on the local network with a dhcp/bootp 
server? If not, then of COUSE ifuping would fail when the adappter is not 
statically assigned. If you DO, does the logs on the dhcp server show 
anything?

CD-ROM problem:
1) Please post your /etc/fstab
2) verify that it contains a line similiar to this one:
/dev/cdrom      /mnt/cdrom         iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
3) What error message are you getting?
