I've run 'tcpdump' on a client/server connection a number of times, and witnessed the same errant behavior. It seems that the client is reporting receipt of <n> bytes of data, but only sending an acknowledgement for <n>-12 bytes. The number of 'missing' bytes is consistent across every trace. As a result, the client receives a partial response message. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, Marc P.S.
