yesterday I tried to upgrade to kernel 2.4. I got the RedHat rpms for
the kernel and the source from a linux magazine.
unfortunatly I made some mistakes.
I did the upgrade from gnome using the gnome rpm program. after clearing
some dependencys, the upgrade startet, but I got several errormessages.
( upgrade for ..... failed)
when I looked into /boot, there was only one file (kernel.h). I copied
my old /boot back, but when I tried to reboot, I had several problems.
1: linux does not finde the modules for the sound card ( not realy a
problem)
2: linux does not see lpt0, which is on an ISA board ( that maybe a
problem), therefore no printer
3: I can not mount the cdrom ( that is a real great problem for me) or
the second disk, which is a windows partition.

when I try to mount the cdrom/sec.disk, I get the following error
message.

hdc: driver not present
mount: /dev/cdrom has a wrong major - or minor device number.

in /dev there are /hdc and a link from cdrom to hdc.

what can I do to mount the cdrom, so that I can reinstall kernel 2.2 or
make a good 2.4 installation??

helmuth
