I think that this is a simple configuration problem. I am porting a large set of perl scripts from AIX and cygwin to redhat. At a number of point the program allows input via STDIN. The backspace, backarrow and delete keys don't work, I get their raw bindings rather than the correct action, just like when you login. I run the program from the bash shell were these keys work fine, via my .inputrc file.
