Hmmm....no gradients at all. Very pronounced, angular stair stepping.
Bummer. OK, I wonder what I missed? It is probably something in the
mysterious XftConfig. This card is an S3Virge card. Is it possible
that even though the RENDER extensions are there, they are not
operational yet on this chipset? If so, why report it? Just thinking
out loud ....

Are any of those alias statements in XftConfig required for anything?
Probably something simple I am missing ...

BTW, thanks to Mike and you for the suggestions. xmag was a little
quicker/easier than gimp.
