I don't know if they're still running said combo (FreeBSD/Apache) anymore, so
the following may not work.

The find out what web server is being run (maybe - they could configure their
server not to return this info):

# telnet www.hotmail.com 80
<CONNECTED INFO>
GET / HTTP 1.1\n
\n

The returned HTML should have HTTP headers with the server type listed.

I just checked this on hotmail.com, and the returned headers show that it is,
in fact, running IIS not Apache. As of about this time last year, they were
still running Apache. As for fingerprinting the OS, nmap does a good job,
but you can quickly run into legal/ethical questions there, and I would STRONGLY
recommend against it.

The people who M$ bought hotmail from ran it on FreeBSD/Apache. M$ tried for
at least three years to move it to IIS, including a couple well-known,
high-profile (ie, mainstream media picked them up) extended outages during
failed attempts. M$ didn't admit to the fact that these outages were tied to
attempted conversions, but I personally did the above check (telnet port 80)
during one of the outages, and saw that they were running IIS. When things
started working again, I tried and saw that they were back to Apache.

At any rate, if we haven't strayed too far off topic yet (rotflmao),
hotmail.com IS running IIS, not Apache. They WERE running Apache as recently
as a year ago (they should've stayed with it, but as we all know, PR makes the
decisions at M$, not IT).
