I would appreciate any help someone might have with upgrading
XFree86. Here's my problem.
I attempted to upgrade my system to Glibc 2.2 with the glibc2.2.2
and glibc-common2.2.2 RPM's on www.rpmfind.net. I had some dependency
problems at first then used the --nodeps to get around it (I think I messed
up by doing this). Anyway after this I installed XFree86 4.0.2 for Glibc
2.2 and have been having massive problems trying to get X up and running.
After installing a second time and using XFree86 -configure and xf86config I
was able to generate an XF86Config file which brings X by itself up but I'm
unable to start GNOME or KDE. GNOME only starts in black and white for the
logon screen and won't bring anything up when I log in, KDE loads half way
but says it can't load a window manager. Xconfigurator isn't even able to
test my X server. When I try to make a XF86Config file with it, there is a
problem at the end when it attempts to test everything. I also noticed that
after moving the /usr/X11R6 directory and installing everything again there
is no executable for Xconfigurator, is this something which only works for
XFree86 3.3.6 and older?
Has anyone else upgraded to XFree86 4.0.2 on a Red Hat 6.2 system. If so
would you mind telling me what steps you did?
I'm doing all this because when I use kernel 2.4.2 with devfs enabled X
wouldn't start. I read something saying that XFree86 4.0.x had better
support for devfs so I figured it would be a simple step to upgrade X.
Before I messed around with my X install everything was working fine for
kernel 2.2.14.
