Hi all,

I am having a problem that I hope someone can help me with. I recently
installed RH7 on my intel SMP machine. I upgraded all the packages and then
installed a custom 2.4.2 kernel. The problem is that shortly after startup and
entering X win, the HD starts grinding away for several seconds and then
cat /proc/meminfo shows all the mem used up as:

total: used: free: shared: buffers: cached:
Mem: 261951488 246566912 15384576 0 47792128 61181952
Swap: 542826496 0 542826496
MemTotal: 255812 kB
MemFree: 15024 kB
MemShared: 0 kB
Buffers: 46672 kB
Cached: 59748 kB
Active: 15140 kB
Inact_dirty: 91280 kB
Inact_clean: 0 kB
Inact_target: 16 kB
HighTotal: 0 kB
HighFree: 0 kB
LowTotal: 255812 kB
LowFree: 15024 kB
SwapTotal: 530104 kB
SwapFree: 530104 kB

I have no RAM disks enabled in the kernel and it doesn't look like it is using
any swap, but the drive grinds away and is quite frustrating with 256Megs RAM.
The whole time the drive is grinding away you can cat /proc/meminfo and watch
the freemem going down. If anyone has any insight into this problem I'd
appreciate it....
