One thing to keep in mind when trying to trouble shoot this is that by
default root telnet access is disabled. It was not clear that you
understood this from your post.

BTW you should make sure that you have installed all the upgrades from
the redhat site for 6.2 or your favorite mirror I frequently use:
ftp://ftp.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/redhat/redhat/updates/6.2/i386/
There are a fair amount of known exploits that have been fixed since 6.2
was released.
