Fax modems can tell the difference between a fax and a non-fax incomming
call, but only after answering it. Fax machines send out a tone over
the phone line when placing a fax call. The problem is that you have to
answer the call before you can detect this. They make Voice/Fax
switches that will direct the call to a fax machine, or an answering
machine, depending on the call. Maybe this could be addapted to your
setup. Another posibility is to get distintive ringing - the type where
you get a second phone number that will ring differently on your ling
when that number is called. As long as your fax modem will handle this
(I think most will...), you can have a second phone number for incomming
fax messages without the expence of a second line.

Another way is the setup I use. I use mgetty+voice, and a
voice/fax/data modem, so my computer is my answering machine, as well as
handling incomming fax and data calls. This works well for me, but it
may not meat your needs. But it is something you may want to look into.
