2.2: ext3. 
2.4: probably xfs

Ext3 is mostly "add journaling to ext2", and is thus pretty
stable. XFS is a port from IRIX, and is IMHO the most promising new
filesystem. SGI even released a preview of it recently - use their
XFS CD and the Red Hat Linux 7 CDs and you get Red Hat Linux 7 with
XFS, 2.4, 7.1beta installer and even devfs:
