This is an old saw but it stands repeating: you get the most mileage from your system 
by compiling your own kernel. Make sure you have the latest utilities such as 
modutils, etc. and go for it. It will be faster and leaner.  A bit of a learning curve 
if you haven't done a compile before, but it doesn't take long to learn.
