You snipped out this:
"See the BUGS section of the manpage for details" (or similar wording).
The reason why I did that was twofold. First, the manpage actually has
the needed info, almost word for word what you found by searching the
Net. Secondly, I wanted to show that the needed information is often
available locally, if you know where to look. Manpages aren't always easy
to read, but they often have the answer. If you forget the answer later,
knowing that it's in the manpage (or some other local doc) can save you a
lot of time.
For the record, the mapage (which took me all of 5 seconds to bring up --
I didn't have a terminal open) says this:
BUGS
On many systems this program should be installed as
setuid(root). This is necessary to lock memory pages.
Locking memory pages prevents the operating system from
writing memory pages to disk. If you get no warning mes
sage about insecure memory 3our operating system supports
locking without being root. The program drops root privi
leges as soon as locked memory is allocated.
