Are you building the kernel against gcc or kgcc ?
My experience was the same when i tried to kompile
linux-2.4.0-test* on my RH7 workstation, but when i read
linux-kernel mailinglist archives i saw that kgcc is the packages
for kernel building. I've edited the mail Makefile and replaced
gcc with kgcc, now I'm happy ;)
