According to their website the Zoom modem is an actual controller based modem. The
USR modem is also controller based and even supports DOS (you know that OS that
crashed less then Windows and was easier to fix when something went wrong), so I'm
guessing that they don't require the ltwinmodem support in the kernel. Has anybody
actually got a winmodem to work under Linux using ltwinmodem? I tried it with a
Lucent WinModem LT and Linux responded "what modem?" Guessing something went wrong
when I compiled the ltwinmodem into the kernel. Maybe I'll try it later, but I'd
really not like to have to work with that type of hardware, just desn't "feel" right.
Of course I didn't like Plug and Play went it was first introduced either.
I'd still prefer to get a USB modem though, but I haven't seen a manufacturer that
will say they support their USB modem under Linux. I'm trying to support only
manufacturers that will come out and say they will support Linux. If somebody has a
USB modem that works, could you let me know.
