Quick and dirty:

Configure your network.  Plug in the card.  Restart networking. If
works => done. If not => make sure network is configured correctly,
restart networking.  If still not working => get latest pcmcia package
from ftp://projects.sourceforge.net/pub/pcmcia-cs.  Compile and
install it (easy, see the docs included with it).  Try card again.  
If works => done.  If not => restart networking.  If works =>
rearrange links in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d (or /etc/rc.d/rc5.d if you start up
in X) so that pcmcia starts before networking; write note to Mr. Hinds
with profuse gratitude; done.  If not => buy a supported card.  
Repeat.  =)
