I am attempting to install Linux RH 6.2 on this new build. I want a basic
Linux Gnome install so I can set up a router but also boot into X...and I need
to keep the install space down.. I built this system out of old parts.
Tekram p5V30-B4 with VX chipset
P166
64 megs of Kinstone 60ns FPM RAM
Floppy
3.5 Floppy
Primary Channel = 850 meg Seagate EIDE
Secondary = Master / EIDE DIGITAL CD ROM and Slave/ Maxtor 135 meg IDE
PCI
Matrox Mystique 220
CNET PRO 120C NIC >> based on Tulip chip have used with Linux many times
Kingstone KNE30 NIC > based on Realtec chip have used with Linux before
ISA
old SB16 soundcard...the kind with the on board controller
VIKING 33.6 hardware fax modem ..runs fine with hayes drivers
The primary drive is a mobile drive bay and this PC also boots and runs
Win98SE2 without a problem using another drive so I know the hardware works
fine.
The printer port and both serial ports are disabled in the BIOS. The BIOS is
set for Non PNP.
I boot the RH 6.2 CD. The install process starts up...I create my
partitions...everything but the swap on the Seagate .....I put the swap on the
Maxtor. I format and check blocks and continue on with Network setup etc....i
choose my packets ...i accept the dependent packets and then the install takes
off. It copies all the files to the hard drive..about 400 to 500 megs and then
starts the install configuration and at this point it hangs. I can move the
mouse but none of the buttons work...keyboard unresponsive...CD drive won't
open..no drive lights are flashing...no error messages. i have to hit the
reset button or power off. I have been through this three times. Twice picking
my own packets and once trying a default install..each time the same thing
happens.
Any ideas on what is causing the hang and what I should do solve it ....or
isolate it ?
thanks
Steve
