Just a thought - is the drive spinning down when idle? If so, the system
will hang for at least 30 seconds, and maybe as long as 2 minutes while
the drive spins up again. Depending on the noise level, you may be able
to hear the drive spin up. This would explain why it only happens when
the system is idle. You may want to get scsiinfo and scsi-config, and
check the setting on your drive.
