I'm using kernel 2.4 on a couple of machines here, and ipchains on one of
them.  All you have to do is load the "ipchains" module, and it will
provide backward compatibility for ipchains.  The "native" tool is
iptables, and is mostly similar to ipchains.  I updated my firewall script
to use iptables in just a few minutes.  iptables has mostly the same
semantics as ipchains, and controls the full functionality of the kernel's
routing facilities, which eliminates the need for other tools, like
ipmasqadm.
