First, this really isn't a topic for this particular list.  There are many
others whose members want to talk about politics.  Having said that...

Many Americans aren't extremely intelligent about government.  Add to
this the fact that candidates hire teams of social scientists to figure
out how to corrupt people's judgment.  Then the charlatan also has much
money to put messages into the media to accomplish this corruption.  What
you are seeing is that this strategy works.
