This is a totally clean build of Linux so the SVGA driver is the only display 
driver installed.  No S3 one at all.

Doesn't that only "kick in" when playing 3D games otherwise it just passes 
control to the 2D card?

Well since upgrading to HelixGnome, enlightenment is no more and the whole 
system is running a lot better and with AFAIK less resource usage.
Except in 1024 mode hehehe

Maybe I'll just treat myself to a new video card and check the archives for 
recommendations for a solid 2D PCI card for Linux.
