We bought our boxes with no OS installed.  I do know that NT has
significant problems recognizing the hardware, at least an older version
that I had a license to as a former MSDN subscriber.  The NT install I
tried required special drivers from Dell just to deal with the buses.

We use a plain RedHat distro with no support, and have now gone to KRUD
(no puns intended) as our source of CD distro.  In case you haven't
heard of KRUD, it is a RedHat derivative that has monthly releases with
the most current patches.  (See http://www.tummy.com/krud/ )
