I did not mean for my message to sound quite as sharp as it came out -
sorry. In my experience, the howto's are often a source of confusion,
especially with regards to CDRW under Redhat. What is really needed is a
Redhat specific howto, and that should really be something that Redhat
provides.

Generally, if you are going to recompile the kernel, I think you are
better off saying N to ide-cd. Even of you have both a CDRW and a CDROM,
you can run them both using the ide-scsi driver. Some people have
reported problems trying to mix and match the two drivers. If you leave
out ide-cd and compile ide-scsi into the kernel, it should correctly
find all your CDRW/CDROM drives with no further effort on your part.
In my opinion, a lot of confusion would be eliminated if Redhat (and
other distros) by default always used ide-scsi to run CDROMs and CDRWs,
instead of ide-cd. I am not aware of any advantage to the use of ide-cd.
