It was in the file /etc/inittab. After correcting it I linux started to ask "login:" during startup it complains about could not execute "/etc/rc.d/rc". I added a dummy line in that file and then it complained "/etc/rc.d/rc.sysconfig" could not be executed. *What these files actually do?* In the docs it is written that these files have some serious startup jobs to be done, but I am simply "touch /etc/rc.d/rc", "chmod 777 /etc/rc.d/rc". I even created /etc/rc.d/sysconfig in the same way but I fear some very important thing has been neglected. Swap file installation is also done in by these files. How to correct this. The whole story starts with installation itself. While installation (which I have donw more that 40 times already) there is a exception during post-install configuration. It used to complain could not open "/etc/inittab/". So as soon as the file copy used to start i used to "CTRL+f2" and then in the console "cat > /mnt/sysimage/etc/inittab"= "id:3:iniddefault:" is added. At least the installation did get completed but after that the login prompt did not come. I copied /etc/inittab file from the one of internet servers using telnet. but problems do not seem do stop at all. *which of the rpm files hold /etc/inittab file* Thanks very much Vikas > > How to login? - I can only start linux by "linux init=/bin/sh". > > It never asks me to "login:" and I see "bash#" straight away. > > When I choose multiuser: > > > > INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel > > > > Help!!!! > > Please!! > > > > Vikas > > -- /* **http://www.programmingParadise.com */ #Vikas Yadav, India //PGP key:http://www.programmingparadise.com/misc/vikas.pgp 'E-mail:[EMAIL PROTECTED] _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
