I'm trying to print from an OpenVMS (VMS version 7.1) Alpha
system to a Linux print queue defined under lpd.

I've used OpenVMS ucx version 4.1 and the LPRSETUP utility to
define a remote "out" queue on the alpha, but have had no success
getting test print files to print to the linux queue.

I know the linux queue is working and is configured properly for
remote systems because it easily allows printing from other linux
systems.

OpenVMS's LPRSETUP is quite simple and at conclusion
generates an OpenVMS version of printcap.

Compaq support seems to think I should be able to send to a
remote Linux queue but they can only supply me with an example
involving an "LPR Compatible Printer" defined on a Winnt system.
Not
really apples to apples comparison.

Is a linux LPD defined printer "LPR compatible"? If not, is there a
variant lpd deamon that would define a printer that could support
print jobs from an OpenVMS/Alpha server?

I'd really appreciate hearing from OpenVMS gurus on how to tackle
this
problem.

The print error msgs on the alpha indicate a problem connecting
with the Linux queue but aren't specific enough to be real useful.

Possibly related to this problem. When I do an "lpc status"
command on linux system, I get:

[root@netgate sbin]# lpc status
lp:
        queuing is enabled
        printing is enabled
        no entries
        no daemon present

What's the significance of "no deamon present" since I know that
the
LPD daemon is indeed running? Would activation of a daemon for
this
queue cause it to communicate with the alpha?

Thanks much.
