The folks at VALinux got back to me on this. It turns out that, in addition
to DOMAINNAME=blahblah, I also needed NISDOMAIN=blahblah in
/etc/sysconfig/network. Don't ask me why. (Also don't ask me why I even had
to edit this file. I never have before. Previously, editing /etc/yp.conf,
/etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts, and running netcfg where more than sufficient!)
