i just finished messing with TT fonts, and what i seem to have established
is:

1) if you're trying to use TT fonts with stock "xfs," you meed to run
        ttmkfdir
2) if you choose to use "ttxfs", you don't need to do anything
        special to the font directory

  seems to work for me.
