Don't use a desktop environment. Use an actual X window manager by itself.
TWM is super-lightweight, and is quite usable if you tweak the heck out of
the resource files. IceWM and BlackBox are supposed to be resource
lightweights, too. Even Enlightenment (lots of resources) will run faster
if it isn't running under a desktop environment.
Bottom line: more features equals more memory and less speed. If you don't
need drag-and-drop everywhere, don't use KDE or GNOME. You can still run
the apps as long as you've installed the libraries.
