If it is the one I am thinking about midentd (masq identd) is the version
that will always reply with a hardcoded username@machinename reply so
that you can connect through a firewall and get into a service that will
require the ident reply. I waded into this a couple of years ago long
when I knew even less than I know now. As a newbie the whole thing ate
my lunch so I try and forget it and here it has come up twice in two
days. I wonder if I am supposed to be learning about this stuff too.
I do use masqerading but have not had to mess with the identd stuff for
quite some time.
I have not needed this since Sprynet got bought by
mci/aol/mindspring/earthlink.
