What version of XFree86 is he installing? Afer installing XFree86 4.0, I had a
similar problem. Editing the config file by hand and deleting everything but
one screen at only one resolution (no virtual desktops) fixed it (for the most
part). X was getting confused by the multiple modes on my
setup. Unfortunately, I get the impression you father is having problems w/ a
distribution version of X (3.3.X?).
