I just tried to install my brand new 6.2 package on a Gateway Solo 9100.
Boots fine on CD but I don't even get the installation classes screen,
either in GUI mode and expert mode.
It hangs at the video definition step with a greyed vertically striped
screen. The video chip is a Trident Cyber 9397 rev 2.43 - 4096 K VRAM.
Setting the bios P&P OS option to Yes or No has no effect.
I had a look at install log console during setup and it correctly detects
the chip, but it sets the resolution to 640x480 and I think the problem
resides in this setting.
I read the FAQ about Trident chips, I also read
http://atlantic.tamu.edu/~bednar/gateway-9100-linux.html and
http://www.sunflow.com/~seth/GW2k-9100.html but didn't see anythingh to pass
as a parameter at boot prompt. What is curious is that I already installed
RH 6.1 and Mandrake 7.0 on this notebook.
Is it possible to install a server in text mode, then add all X related rpms
after to get the GUI ?
Also : It has nothing to do with my problem but I would know if there is a
quick & simple method to install Gnome rpms after an install has been made
with KDE (I mean without to install them one at a time). Maybe an upgrade
would do the trick ?
Since RH support sees no solution (!?), would someone have any hint or clue,
or will I have to reinstall 6.1 then upgrade ?
TIA,
Alain
