My solution to this, which has worked flawlessly, is to use Partition
Magic to repartition the drive. You'll need to create a boot
partition below the 1024 cylinder limit. Linux does not have to be
the first os on your hard drive. Partition Magic will allow you to
insert this boot partition wherever you like. I've not worked with
any of the open source partitioning tools when attempting
non-destructive repartitioning. Others may comment on these options.
Once the partitions are set, LILO or BootMagic, which comes with
Partition Magic, as boot managers, will work just fine. The choice is yours. However,
if you decide to use BootMagic, be sure to install LILO in your boot
partition, NOT in the MBR, which would otherwise overwrite BootMagic.
And, of course, you have emergency boot discs ready at hand ;)
Above the boot partition, you can do anything you like. However,
your life will be simpler if you leave W98SE as the first os on the
hard drive.
FWIW, there is just an announcement of a new release of LILO which
eliminates the 1024 cylinder problem. It's brand new, I've not tried
it and have not yet seen any reports of its use on this list. So, if
you go that route, caution would be advised.
