My big quandary.. How to get Linux installed without having USB
networking support on Linux.

This machine has no floppy, no CDROM drive, and it doesn't have any
kind of PCI or ISA bus for a currently supported networking *card*

However, it does have a hard drive (now) and USB, which is how I have
it networked under Win*lows

I can load the raw Linux files on to a folder on the Windows
partition fairly easily, since my Linksys 10/100BT Ethernet adaptor
works fine on windows..(My ultimate plan is to apply the USB backport
for 2.2.14 kernel)

If you have access to the SuSE manual, and I would guess it's on line,
they have a whole lot of info on how to install from a DOS/Windows
partition. (You copy stuff onto the hard drive, and then install, but
they claim it works.) It seems like SuSE has better documentation than
other distros that I've seen. Maybe you'll want to use SuSE. They also
have some info on network installs, but it was not too clear to me, and
they won't help you with that, unless you have a business contract with
them.
