This isn't really an answer to your question, just a small diatribe from
me. Personally I refuse to use the mouse in console primarily because:
1) Running gpm (the program/daemon that runs a console mouse)
It can seriously interfere with X and half the time it doesn't work for
no particular reason, is slow, broken and a myriad of other probems as
you yourself has find out.
2) Disaster Recovery
I've found it particularly difficult to hard crash my fully operational
Linux system. Nonetheless, it is easy to lose mice services either in X
or under gpm. If you rely on the mouse to operate your system, it's
going to take you longer to recover from disaster. Why? No mice means go
back to using keyboard which you may or may not remember or even know
how to use.
RedHat, in comparison to other distros, is relatively easy to setup and
START using. This is the point. No Linux operating system - or for that
matter no Windows operating system - is easy to administer. Tough.
That's life. The Good Thing [tm] about Linux is that you learn how to
administer it and you can administer it. And it really isn't that
difficult.
One step at a time. Putting it bluntly, who cares about the mouse? Maybe
I'm just old-fashioned (even though I am only about 24 years old) but I
prefer the keyboard and command line any day...
