PPP Under 6.1

I've tried to get pppd going under RH6.1 (I need to run a permanent PPP
connection over a modem). According to the /var/log/messages file:

modprobe: can't locate module char-major-108

In conf.modules, this is an alias for ppp_generic, which I can't find
either.

All this used to work under RH5.2, but I can't see how to get a
permanent PPP link going under RH6.1

Any pointers?
