You should be able to upgrade from Red Hat Linux 5.2 to the current
version (Red Hat Linux 6.2) BUT take note that what normally makes it go
wrong is that someone has HEAVILY modified the system. Some folks don't
even realize that they've made what is considered heavy modifications
because it's been major revisions since they've upgraded.

My best suggestion is this... If you are outside of Red Hat's supported
release set then back up your data (which you should do anyways) and
reformat the drive. Then go through the install. Once the install is
conpleted run a diff against your old configs and the new configs to see
what has changed. See if the structures are the same. Of course, you'll
get reported changes due to your old info not being in the new files,
but see exactly what has changed. It may simply be you copying the old
info back in or making a patch for your config files to add in the old
info.

Now, if you are within the supported range (5.2, 6.0, 6.1 and 6.2) you
should have an easier time. But bear in mind, 5.2 was a libc5 based
release. The first release for glibc2 was 6.0. What does that matter you
may ask. Simply that with the advent of the 6.x series apps were built
against a different set of core libraries. The 6.x series attempts to
keep backwards compatability by throwing in the compat-*.rpm packages
but the more revisions behind you are the more likely things are to
break.
This is one thing that I suggest you heavily consider. If you recompiled
the source packages to take advantage of a glibc2 change over on your
own, you can also run into problems if the deps have changed on the same
but newer versioned packages.

OK, Dave. Quit rambling and say what you mean! OK, if you are 5.2 and
before, reformat and reinstall the system after making backups. If you
are 6.0 or 6.1, back up your data in case the isntaller pukes while
upgrading the system and expect an easier time of it.
