Ya know, I've looked and can find no .xinitrc, no .xsession.  The only file
close is the system-wide xinitrc.  Do I take it that I could simply add the
xhost +localhost to the system-wide xinitrc?

I repeat. In plain English. Type "xhost +localhost" then su to root
and all will be well. If you do this often, stick it in ~/.xinitrc to
make it the default.
