First off, check out www.pricewatch.com -- p2-400's are like 107, and
p2-450's are around 110 IIRC.

Motherboards, go Asus P2B. Great motherboards with great Linux support, I
don't think you can find a better board than an Asus. If you can though,
get the p3v4x and get a ATA/66 HD; I have some friends that rant about how
great the ata/66 speeds are. Not to mention you get 4x AGP and 133Mhz FSB
too. I know the P2B is well-supported under Linux, anyone know about the
p3v4x?

Re: Processors, if you aren't really going to be pushing them, a
p2-400/450 should be more than enough, but as mentioned in another reply,
you can never have enough RAM.

here is a spec sheet for a machine I'm building right now:

Asus P2B (actually an extra one I had lying around)
PII-400 ($107 makes me want to get 2 and get the P2B-D >:])
128 SDRAM (next time I'm getting PC100 or better)
IBM 6.4 GB HD (I love IBM HDs -- had great luck w/ them)
Matrox G400 Dual Head 64MB (you gotta spoil yourself sometimes)
Logitech 3-button Serial Mouse (Love these, just wish it was PS/2)
Belkin Ergoboard (love these too)

and hopefully, if I can justify it to myself or get more work:

Hitachi Superscan 753.. :)

otherwise I'm stuck w/ my POS MAG 1795.

HTH,
/me
